Close your eyes and recall this past summer…
Remember how we didn’t get any rainfall (at least in SoCal) for months!
Then imagine what this lack of rain and moisture does to the soil…
How it makes the soil dry out… causing deep cracks.
Then the ground becomes hard, it struggles to absorb water again.
During winter, a similar thing happens to your skin.
The dry air pulls water from your skin, drying out and shriveling your skin cells. This then leads to premature fine lines and wrinkles.
However, you don’t have to accept rough, wrinkly skin as just part of living in a dry winter climate.
Here’s how Dr. Chasan recommends treating dry, tight, wrinkly winter skin:
[1] Applying topical moisturizers will bind some water into your skin’s upper layers, which helps mask tiny lines and creases. But in the long-term, if you want to seal the deep and wide open cracks in your skin, you need to hydrate the deepest layers.
[2] Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a moisture magnet—and the most powerful moisturizer of your deepest skin layers. HA retains up to 1000 times its own weight in water! And pulling water into your thirsty skin cells is what gives your skin that supple, plump, youthful look.
[3] In addition to supplementing with hyaluronic acid, Dr. Chasan recommends using a humidifier to moisten the air in your home.
[4] Avoid using soap whenever possible. Soaps strip away your natural skin oils and make it more prone to getting dehydrated, flaky and wrinkly.
Instead of fragrant, chemical-filled soaps that form a thick lather, try soap-free cleansers. Using a soap-free cleanser helps your skin avoid dryness and irritation without stripping away natural moisturizing oils.
[5] Be gentle to your skin. The last thing dry, irritated skin needs is a bath sponge, scrub brush, or a rough washcloth assaulting the top-most layers. So be gentle when bathing it.
Regardless of how old you are, how dry or irritated your dry skin is… following these tips will help to restore your skin’s youthful glow and cause winter wrinkles and fine lines to fade, while helping your skin feel more hydrated and youthful again.
